The 3rd Law of Personal Energy – Stress is Both Good and Bad

Stress is good and bad. For most of us a certain level of stress is good for us. When you think about it at a deep level, you realize that all growth occurs outside of your comfort zone. We need stress in order to progress and grow into something more than we are now.

However, when unchecked, when exposed to a chronic and unrelenting high level of stress, our body begins to break down.

This happens across the spectrum of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual types of stress. Here are some examples:

The 2nd Law of Personal Energy – The Rhythms of Energy

Anyone who as ever paid attention will realize that there is a rhythm to life. Seasons come and go, animals migrate, and the tides oscillate regularly. The most well known rhythm is the transfer of night to day and vice versa. In order to maximize our energy levels, we need to find the natural rhythm of energy and go with it, not against it. If we try to cancel out these rhythms Mother Nature has instituted, we do it at a our own peril.

Look at our energy rhythms. We need to work and expend energy but then we also need to completely disconnect and recover as much energy as possible. This is one of the rhythms of energy and life of which I speak. When we try to go against this cycle, our body begins to break down and we find ourselves completely devoid of the most important assets we possess, our heath and our energy.

Energy Drinks And The Adrenal Glands

energy-drinksEnergy drink.  Really?? I know huge multimillion dollar marketing and advertising budgets go to extremes to convince us that we will see increased performance and sharper concentration benefits and not to mention the “coolness” factor, of drinking energy drinks, but seriously, how gullible are we really?

Adrenal Glands & Navy Seals

Interestingly enough even navy seals can’t be on high alert all the time. They have several states they move through and name each state by colors….These states of alertness taught by Navy Seals might help to give you a better idea of what you are doing that may be stressing you out and burning your energy inefficiently.

To Get More Done, Slow Down

I just read a fantastic article entitled “To Get More Done, Slow Down” from Peter Bergman over at the Harvard Business Blog.

This article hit close to home as I have been thinking about this very subject quite a bit in my own life.  Downtime is important.  We try to pretend that it is not, or worse that it is a bad thing.  No pain no gain right?

Thats one way to live life I guess.  However, most people I know that live by that mantra end up miserable emotionally and suffering physically and health-wise sooner or later.

Think about lifting a dumbbell to make your arm stronger.  Although you don’t really think about it, the rest part of lifting weights is just as important as the actual lifting itself.  There are olympic weight lifters that only lift once or twice a week because they realize the importance of rest and recover in the muscle building process.  Its during recovery that muscle is actually strengthened, not during the activity.

Anyways, this principle has application in many other areas of life.  I think you’d agree that we typically don’t do enough recovery.  If you are not giving yourself one or two days a week of rest, it will catch up to you.  Its not a matter of if, its a matter of when.

Read the article.  Its facinating.
